<image:title>ABOUT - Dr. Joanne Chan, BSc, OD</image:title>
<image:caption>Dr. Joanne Chan was born and raised in Vancouver, B.C. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology at the University of British Columbia, followed by continuing her studies at the State University of New York to attain her Doctorate of Optometry degree. Dr. Chan graduated with distinction and was a member of the Beta Sigma Kappa International Optometric Honor Society. During her externships, Dr. Chan developed a strong foundation in medical optometry while providing patient care at the Gouverneur Hospital in New York and the Wilmington Veteran Affairs Medical Center in Delaware. Both of these sites placed heavy emphasis on the diagnosis and management of glaucoma, retinal diseases, neuro-ocular disorders and systemic conditions with ophthalmic complications. While adept in providing clinical care to patients of all ages, Dr. Chan has a particular interest in contact lens fittings and myopia control for children. During her internship in New York, she had the opportunity to provide patient care in the Myopia Control Clinic, a newly-established service at the University Optometric Center. Treatment was targeted toward slowing down nearsightedness in children through the use of orthokeratology (i.e. Ortho-K lenses), multifocal soft contact lenses and medicinal atropine. Dr. Chan continues to actively discuss and offer myopia control management to children and their families in hopes of preventing high myopic development starting at an early age. When not in the office, Dr. Chan can often be found hopping from one restaurant to the next as she channels her inner foodie. Dr. Chan is fluent in English, Cantonese, and basic Mandarin.</image:caption>

<image:caption>It is important that many eye diseases be detected early to minimize the chance of severe vision compromise. Some eye conditions may even be an indication of systemic problems occurring elsewhere within the body. Depending on the condition and severity, our optometrists may co-manage with ophthalmologists, family doctors and other specialists to ensure our patients’ overall well-being. These may include glaucoma, cataracts, retinal diseases, dry eye syndrome.</image:caption>

<image:title>Services - Pediatrics</image:title>
<image:caption>Healthy eyes and good vision are critically important components of a child's ability to learn. In fact, it is found that 80 percent of learning is visual-based. We recommend that every child receives an initial eye exam between 6 to 12 months of age, followed by annual exams during the school years. Some signs that may indicate a child is having visual problems include complaints of headaches, tendency to rub his or her eyes, holding reading materials very close or avoiding near work. Children’s annual eye exams are partially covered by MSP up until 18 years of age.</image:caption>

<image:title>Services - Orthokeratology & Myopia Control</image:title>
<image:caption>Many children are developing high amounts of myopia (i.e. nearsightedness) at an early age. Progression can lead to a higher risk of sight-threatening diseases as adults - this includes conditions such as retinal detachment and glaucoma. Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) is a specialty contact lens treatment that has been shown to reduce the rate of myopic progression. It involves non-surgical corneal reshaping of the eye using night-time custom contact lenses. This reversible and non-invasive procedure eliminates the need for any glasses or contact lenses during daytime. Of note, Ortho-K is also an excellent option for adults who are seeking an alternative to conventional glasses/contact lens wear or laser vision correction surgery. See our FAQs for more information about this service.</image:caption>

<image:title>Services - Laser Vision Correction Co-Management</image:title>
<image:caption>Laser vision correction is a surgical option that can be considered if one would like to achieve good vision without the need for glasses or contact lenses. A consultation with an optometrist can determine whether a patient is a good candidate for the procedure. We co-manage and refer to local surgeons, after which we follow closely with our patients for routine assessments to ensure a safe and healthy recovery process.</image:caption>
