Orthokeratology (Night-time Contacts)
FAQs

How do Ortho-K lenses work?

Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) lenses are custom-designed contact lenses worn overnight to gently reshape the front surface of the eye (the cornea). While you sleep, the lenses temporarily correct nearsightedness and certain amounts of astigmatism, allowing you to enjoy clear vision throughout the day without glasses or daytime contact lenses.

Are Ortho-K lenses comfortable?

Most patients find Ortho-K lenses surprisingly comfortable. Because the lenses are worn while sleeping, the adaptation period is often very short. Many patients become accustomed to the lenses within a few nights and are barely aware of them while they sleep.

How often do I need to wear Ortho-K lenses?

Once the desired vision correction has been achieved, Ortho-K lenses must be worn regularly to maintain the effect. Most patients wear their lenses every night, although some individuals with lower levels of myopia may be able to maintain clear vision with less frequent wear. Your optometrist will determine the schedule that is most appropriate for you.

Are children good candidates for Ortho-K?

Yes. Ortho-K is an excellent option for many children and adolescents. In addition to providing clear daytime vision without glasses or contact lenses, research has shown that Ortho-K can help slow the progression of myopia (nearsightedness), potentially reducing the risk of developing high myopia later in life.

How long has Ortho-K been available?

Orthokeratology has been practiced for several decades. Advances in corneal mapping technology, lens design, and highly oxygen-permeable materials have made modern Ortho-K safer, more effective, and more predictable than ever before.

Is Ortho-K safe?

When prescribed and monitored by an experienced eye care professional, Ortho-K is considered a safe and effective treatment option. Regular follow-up visits and proper lens care are important to ensure optimal results and long-term eye health.

Who is a candidate for Ortho-K?

Ortho-K may be suitable for children and adults with mild to moderate myopia, with or without astigmatism. The best way to determine whether Ortho-K is right for you is through a comprehensive eye examination and consultation.
